The initial inspiration came from shadows cast on grass. After a few weeks she devised a process which did not create the object she chose on the canvas as an unflat image. The subject instead transforms into a representation of the subject, where the surface transforms into the medium for it's own painterly interpretation, especially when the subjects are living or perishable items for example, like humans or fruits. Alexa's style of painting is ephemeral and only the images of her work are preserved. Both the painting and photographic techniques are so tightly coordinated that the result is nothing but a two-dimensional flat space, which achieves trompe l'oeil. The third dimension is only visible within certain places, such as near the eyes or hair. Meade frequently blends her painted characters in the 3D world surrounding her. They can interact in this self-created universe. This is a way of breaking down the barriers between painting, photography, performance and installation.
