
Queen Latifah was born to Dana Elaine Owens in Newark, New Jersey, on March 18, 1970. Latifah, the second child of Lance Owens and Rita Owens is well-known for her political activism and acting skills , as well as for her talent for rhyme. When she was 8 years older her Muslim relative gave her the name Latifah, meaning "delicate and sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah began singing in the Shiloh Baptist Choir located in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Her first performance was when she sang "Home" in the role of Dorothy in a show of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's Parochial School. Her mother was a key influencer; she was in touch with the students and the music. Mark James, a local disc jockey who is also popularly known as D.J., was invited to attend the event. Mark the 45 King invited her to perform at school dance.
